In Vienna, parents and guardians can choose between private and municipal kindergartens.
All children can attend municipal and private kindergartens in Vienna free of charge until they start compulsory schooling. Additional costs may arise for meals or extra services offered by private kindergartens, children’s groups or day parents.
To be eligible for a free kindergarten place, at least one parent and the child need to have their primary residence in Vienna for the whole time the child attends kindergarten. In addition, the child’s name also needs to be entered in the register of children attending kindergarten in Vienna (client ID). A client ID is required for both municipal and private kindergartens. When you register for a place at a municipal kindergarten, you will automatically receive a client ID. If you want to obtain a place at a private kindergarten, you need to apply for a client ID with the the City of Vienna’s Kindergartens Department (MA 10).
