After-school care for primary school children

Parents who register their children for a half-day primary school will be informed by the school’s headteacher about the different types of after-school care available to them. When registering their children for their first year at primary school, parents/guardians can state whether they need after-school care. Primary school children attending a half-day primary school can go to a municipal or private after-school centre (Hort) in the afternoons.

Children in Year 2 or higher can register for an after-school care place with the service centres of Municipal Department Kindergartens (MA 10).

Information

Day-care services at schools

In addition to after-school centres and private child-care facilities, many schools also offer in-house day-care services. There are two types of services available: full-day schools (Ganztagsschule), where all children stay the whole day and lessons alternate with recreation time, and open schools (offene Schule), where children can either go half day or full day and after-school care is being offered in the afternoons. The costs for these day-care services are based on parents’ income.

Information about in-school day-care services is available from the Bildungsberatung Wien educational guidance network.
