When enrolling your child in school, the headteacher will provide information about the available after-school care options. If your child attends a half-day primary school, you can register them for either a municipal or a private after-school care centre (Hort). When applying for a place in a municipal after-school care centre, you can specify two preferred locations. These preferences will be taken into account during the allocation process if possible. If you wish to enrol your child in a private after-school care centre, you must apply directly to the private provider.
Children starting school
If your child receives a place at a half-day primary school in Vienna, you can apply for a place in a municipal after-school care centre using the school placement confirmation. The registration deadline is stated in the letter you receive from the Vienna Board of Education (Wiener Bildungsdirektion). Places are allocated after the school enrolment period has ended. The school itself cannot guarantee or confirm a place in an after-school care centre. By the end of May at the latest, you will receive a written notification informing you whether your child has been offered a municipal after-school care place and at which location. The offered place may differ from your preferred location.
Children from Year 2 onwards
Children in Year 2 and above can be registered for a municipal after-school care place for the upcoming school year either online or through the service centres of the City of Vienna’s Kindergartens Department until the end of March. By the end of May at the latest, you will receive a written notification informing you whether your child has been offered a municipal after-school care place and at which location. The offered place may differ from your preferred locations.

The calculation of the fee reduction is carried out by the service centres of the City of Vienna’s Kindergartens Department.
