Open Government Data (OGD) means that the City of Vienna makes data, figures and documents from the City Administration openly/publicly available, to be used for any purpose. This process is guided by two principles called “open by default” and “open by design”.
For example, OGD comprises several hundred data sets with detailed information on one-way streets, historical settlements and aerial photographs, WIFI hotspots or air pollutant levels measured in Vienna.
Private individuals, businesses, scientists and researchers are free to use these verified data sets, for instance when programming applications or to increase transparency in general.
The data is usually published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license, which allows users to share, copy, distribute, and adapt the work as long as proper credit is given to the original creator.

Open Government Data and the Information Freedom Act (IFG)
Since 1 September 2025, the Austrian Information Freedom Act (IFG) requires public authorities in Austria to actively publish all data not subject to specific data protection regulations as Open Government Data. In practice, this means that data must be published according to certain standards and on a central platform like data.gv.at. The technology supporting OGD data publication includes interfaces (APIs) and automatic processes. Publishing OGD started off as a mostly voluntary measure to enhance innovation and transparency, but with the Information Freedom Act it has become mandatory for all public authorities.

The City of Vienna and data.gv.at offer a wide variety of data:
- Geodata: administrative boundaries, address register, traffic and transport networks, building information
- Opening hours of public service offices: addresses and opening hours of city administration offices and other public services or facilities
- Traffic and transport data & routing: real-time data provided by Vienna’s public transport operator Wiener Linien (stations, lines, platforms), routing data for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists; data on public transport, one-way streets and road signs.
- Further data types available: statistics, elections results, environmental and meteorological data, as well as data on education and training, tourism, healthcare and public health.
