Private kindergartens, children’s groups and day parents

Private kindergartens are important partners of the City and contribute to the variety of child-care services in Vienna. When you want to register your child for a private kindergarten, it is best to visit the kindergartens you are interested in in person and speak with the headteachers. First of all, you need to apply for a client ID with Municipal Department Kindergartens (MA 10). After that you can register your child directly with the kindergarten or with the organisation operating the kindergarten.

Day parents

Day parents (Tagesmutter/Tagesvater) regularly provide childcare to a maximum of five children in their own family home. This allows them to cater to the children’s individual needs.

Detailed information about child-care services provided by day parents is available from Wiener Hilfswerk (German), Volkshilfe Wien (German), Verein Eltern für Kinder Österreich (German) and Kinderdrehscheibe (German).

Children’s groups

A children’s group (Kindergruppe) is an extended family-like form of child-care. A group may comprise a maximum of 14 children who are cared for simultaneously. Children’s groups are looked after by a children’s group carer. There is a large number of different groups focusing on different educational aspects.

Information about private child-care service providers is available from Kinderdrehscheibe. The organisation helps parents find places at private facilities (day parents, kindergartens and after-school care) and supports free-lance day parents.
