LIFE DICCA - project aims and measures
Aims
The overarching objective of the EU LIFE DICCA project is to develop a strategy for adapting inner-city ecosystems to climate change using the Danube Island as an example. It is envisaged that this strategy will also be applicable to other ecosystems in Vienna as well as to other European cities.
In order to achieve this overarching objective, the project has the following main aims
- Reaching climate targets by adapting to climate change in the management, maintenance and upkeep of ecosystems in major urban areas
- Developing a climate change adaptation strategy for the Danube Island with regard to ecosystems and biodiversity
- Increasing the resistance/resilience of the Danube Island ecosystem to the negative impacts of climate change
- Improving protection and preservation of biodiversity and enhancing the ecological stepping-stone function in heavily used areas through management of visitor flows, creation of new ecosystems and revitalization of existing ones
- Transferability of this adaptation strategy through targeted roll-out to the whole of Vienna and other major cities
- Raising awareness of climate action, biodiversity and the value of ecosystems among the Viennese public
Measures
