A look back at Vienna Biodiversity Day 2021
Vienna Biodiversity Day was held for the 20th time on 2 June 2021, with a team of experts surveying the fauna and flora of the Danube Island.
The surveys were carried out in the vicinity of the Wehr 1 barrage, where the teams recorded the resident plant, fungi and animal species they found in the area, including insects, amphibians, reptiles and birds.
Butterfly and moth species observed included the orange-coloured large copper, the black-and-red variable burnet moth and the rare underwing, while the many field scabious flowers in the meadow were abuzz with bees and dragonflies.
Due to the corona pandemic, the 2021 Biodiversity Day could not be held as a public event.
Participants
This year's Biodiversity Day also focused on the EU LIFE DICCA project. The project, which is run by Municipal Department 45 - Water Management (MA 45), aims to counteract the negative impact of climate change on the Danube Island.
Every two years the event is organised by Municipal Department 22 - Environmental Protection (MA 22) (German), this year in collaboration with Municipal Department 45 - Water Management (MA 45) (German).
GEO Biodiversity Day
The "GEO Biodiversity Day" was initiated by the renowned German nature magazine GEO and is celebrated throughout Europe every June.
