Integration in Vienna - Multilingualism

People in Vienna speak many different languages. This multilingualism has a lot of potential. Municipal Department 17 - Integration and Diversity (MA 17) promotes this potential with specific projects and publications in several languages.

Multilingual reading mentors

Multilingual ballons

Multilingual reading mentors should make reading in their mother tongues more fun for children. Multilingual reading mentors read to groups of up to eight children in kindergartens, primary schools and after school clubs in Vienna. The City of Vienna continuously looks for reading mentors: Are you interested in becoming a multilingual reading mentor?

Tutoring for Romani

Romani children and young people can get free of charge tutoring (Roma-Lernhilfe) at the public learning centres (VHS) where they are supported in doing their homework in German, Serbian and Romanes.

Communication between parents and teachers

The School ABC (Schul-ABC) supports the communication between teachers and parents with a mother tongue other than German. It lists translations of the most important words and phrases used in the school context.

Barbecue masters

Barbecue masters speak German and the languages of the largest migrant groups in Vienna. They inform people, who use public barbecue areas, about the relevant rules and regulations and supervise the barbecue areas to avoid conflict or mediate between the parties concerned.
