Vienna Water Day at the VIC

Hall with large inflatable rubber duck and people

Once a year, the Vienna Service Office, the liaison office of the City of Vienna at the Vienna International Centre (VIC), organises a Vienna Day. Various departments of the City of Vienna present themselves and their services to the UN staff on site.

On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the First Vienna Mountain Spring Pipeline, this year's Vienna Day was entitled "Vienna Water Day". The aim was to give the international public an insight into the variety of departments that deal with water in different ways. The aim was to highlight the importance of water in the city.

In addition to the Vienna Water Department (MA 31), the Vienna Sports Office (MA 51), the Wiener Hafen, the Municipal Swimming Pools (MA 44), Wien Energie, DDSG Blue Danube, Vienna Waste Water Management, the Water Management (MA 45) and the Central Danube Region were also present. The information stands were well attended by the visitors. A special highlight was a 3x3 metre inflatable rubber duck.

150 years of water supply in Vienna

The big anniversary was not only celebrated at the VIC. In October 2023, Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen and Mayor Michael Ludwig officially opened the "WirWasser" anniversary fountain in Favoriten. The First Vienna Mountain Spring Pipeline was also honoured this year with the "Hydro-Environment World Heritage Award".

The commissioning of the pipeline in 1873 marked the beginning of Vienna's modern water supply. The people of Vienna are still benefiting from the decision to bring high-quality drinking water directly from the Alps to Vienna.
