Vienna as a centre of international diplomacy

Vienna's international and cosmopolitan character is the key driver of its success.

As the seat of about 40 international organisations, about 320 bilateral and multilateral diplomatic representations with about 3,800 diplomats and more than 6,000 international officials, Vienna is a hub of international diplomacy.

United Nations (UN)

Vienna is the only city in the European Union which, for 40 years, has hosted one of the 4 headquarters of the United Nations at the Vienna International Centre (VIC). Further headquarters are located in New York, Geneva and Nairobi. The Vienna International Centre (VIC) has long become one of the landmarks of the city.

Other international organisations

In addition to the offices and organisations of the United Nations, Vienna is also the seat of a number of other international organisations and institutions, such as the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and several non-governmental organisations (NGOs). Other organisations have their seat in other Austrian cities.

International organisations and institutions based in Vienna and its surrounding areas

As a host city to international organisations and diplomatic representations, Vienna is active in a number of cooperation projects:

  • Together with UNIS, the United Nations Information Service in Vienna, the City of Vienna supports projects which promote the dissemination of the SDGs. Cooperation projects address issues such as the UN Peace Day and human rights and involve young people and students from Austria and Austria's neighbouring countries like the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovenia, which are also serviced by UNIS. Another focus of cooperation is the UN Urban Agenda.
  • For many years, young students from all over the world have come to Vienna every summer to participate in VIMUN (Vienna International Model UN), a UN simulation conference at the Vienna International Centre. One highlight of their programme in Vienna is a gala reception at Vienna's City Hall held for the young people from more than 40 nations.
  • Twice a year, staff members of international organisations and foreign representations have the opportunity to catch up on various urban issues at the Vienna City Welcome event at Vienna's City Hall.
  • Vienna supports the international Festival Bazaar of the United Nations Women's Guild at the VIC, which is a fund-raising event for different children's charities around the globe.
  • The annual DASICON conferences, which are organised by students of the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna, address current issues and are supported by the City of Vienna.
