At the India Day, the Indian Embassy in Vienna proudly presented its country to the local public. India has the largest population of all nations in the world. It is known as a uniquely colourful, diverse amalgam of various cultures, religions, languages and landscapes.

The event was mainly held in English. In her opening speech as a representative of the City of Vienna, Pia Maria Wieninger, Member of the Vienna City Council and Provincial Parliament, welcomed the participants on behalf of Mayor Michael Ludwig. She also found personal words of praise for India based on her own stays abroad there.

Young people from local schools joined in a range of interesting and instructive activities at the India Day. The programme included presentations, music and dance performances, yoga sessions and even a henna tattooing workshop. Highlights of the day were a chance to savour Indian specialities and the final dance performance that brought almost all pupils on stage in a musical flash mob.

Altogether, it was an inspiring day with a mix of English, history, geography, music and movement classes for the young participants. Above all, they had a great opportunity to get insights in and develop an understanding of other cultures.

75 years of diplomatic relations

India has maintained very good diplomatic relations with Austria for almost 75 years, which go back in particular to the personal friendship between the then heads of state Indira Gandhi and Bruno Kreisky.

During a recent stay in Vienna, the Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar visited the famous Vienna New Year's Concert. The Austrian capital is known for its cultural highlights in India, and has become a prime destination for tourists from the region. At the same time, expert delegations from India regularly travel to Vienna to discuss various topics of interest with their counterparts in the Vienna City Administration, particularly in the Department of Waste Management, Street Cleaning and Vehicle Fleet (MA 48) and the Vienna Social Fund.
