Ban on barbecues in Vienna

The lengthy hot-weather period and drought have led to a ban on barbecues in Vienna at all public BBQ stations on Danube Island, in forests, in areas close to forests and on private property within so-called high-risk areas.

The ban has been lifted on 17 July 2025.

Smoking and all open fires are also banned in forests and nearby risk areas on City of Vienna territory. Barbecues in private gardens away from the forest risk areas are permitted. However, in view of the current heat and drought, the City of Vienna urges people to use extreme caution with open-air barbecues.

Rigorous checks

The BBQ stations and areas on Danube Island are inspected by employees of the Vienna Water Management Department (MA 45) as well as by BBQ station supervisors. MA 49 are keeping an eye on BBQ stations close to the Vienna Woods to check whether the ban is observed. Employees of the Parks and Gardens Department (MA 42) are checking the BBQ station in Draschepark for any possible violations of the ban.
