Vienna and Ljubljana extend their cooperation

On 29 July, Mayor Michael Ludwig signed a new cooperation agreement with Zoran Janković, his counterpart from Ljubljana, during a formal ceremony at Vienna City Hall. Mayor Janković was accompanied by a high-level delegation from the Slovenian capital.

In future, the cities plan to step up cooperation, particularly in the areas of public transport, sustainable mobility, social housing, social policy and sustainable tourism.

In doing so, we are expanding our cooperation in precisely those areas that are of particular importance to our citizens' quality of life. A partnership between cities is much more than simply fostering friendly relations. It is a partnership for innovation. After all, every city must develop answers to similar challenges. No one has to find answers to all these questions on their own. That is Europe's true strength: we share knowledge. We share experiences. And we share the courage to break new ground.

Ljubljana has undergone impressive development in recent years. Anyone walking through Ljubljana today will experience a city that "has consistently given public space back to the people. Pedestrians take centre stage. Sustainable mobility is part of everyday life. Historical heritage and modern urban development are not seen as opposites, but as complementary elements. Ljubljana impressively demonstrates how a European capital can set international standards."

Vienna and Ljubljana have a long-standing partnership: the first cooperation agreement was signed in 1999, and the City of Vienna maintains its own liaison office in the Slovenian capital. Both cities share similar objectives in the areas of climate protection, sustainable mobility and affordable housing. Ljubljana is particularly interested in Vienna's experience in waste management, district heating, public transport, urban development and the communication of major infrastructure projects.
