Registration for primary school

Registration for the first year of primary school (Volksschule) in Vienna is usually open in November. You can register your child at any primary school in Vienna.

Assessment of school readiness

When registering for primary school, your child's school readiness (Schulreife) will be assessed, i.e. their social, emotional, language and motor skills will be determined. Another focus will be on how your child perceives and recognises things (so-called cognitive skills). Children will engage in different playful activities where they can demonstrate their skills for assessment.

The school will also look at your child's kindergarten portfolio, which describes children's developmental progress at kindergarten. Parents need to bring the portfolio to the registration appointment.

The result of the school readiness assessment will be discussed with parents right away. Children who are not considered school ready will attend a one-year pre-school class (Vorschulklasse), where they receive intensive support and preparation for their transition to school.
