Mayor of Ljubljana visits Vienna
On 26 August 2025, a six-member delegation led by Zoran Jankovic, Mayor of Ljubljana, visited his counterpart in Vienna, Mayor Michael Ludwig. The exchange focused on topics such as energy transition and sustainable waste management.
The delegation first met with experts from the City of Vienna's Department for Waste Management, Street Cleaning and Vehicle Fleet (MA 48) and WKU, responsible for planning and managing municipal projects in the field of environmental protection. During this expert exchange, the participants gained a comprehensive insight into Vienna's waste management system. The long-term waste management plan was presented, which emphasises educational activities for waste separation and prevention. The delegation from Ljubljana expressed interest in key indicators such as the amount of waste per household and the recycling rate.
The delegation then visited the Pfaffenau waste incineration plant, where discussions focused on sustainable energy production. This topic is very interesting for Ljubljana, which is currently planning to build its own waste incineration plant.
Meeting of Mayors at Vienna City Hall
At noon, an official meeting took place between Mayors Zoran Jankoviic and Michael Ludwig, as well as former Mayor of Vienna, Michael Häupl. Members of the Vienna Provincial Parliament and the Vienna City Council were also present. Discussions focused on the long-standing good relations between Vienna and Ljubljana. Common challenges and strategies in the fields of energy transition and sustainable urban development were also discussed.
Later that day, there was an exchange with Executive City Councillor Ulli Sima. Topics such as mobility, energy supply, and citizen involvement in urban planning were discussed. An expert discussion took place at the end of the event between the head of the Ljubljana Public Holding Company (LJH), public utility company Voka Snaga, and an expert from WIPARK parking garages. The focus was on parking space management data systems.
The visit demonstrated the value of professional exchange between Vienna and Ljubljana, and how the two cities can learn from each other by cooperating to successfully address the challenges of sustainable urban development.
