Reading Room of the Municipal and Provincial Archives of Vienna

Specific records like death certificates can be used on microfilm. Be aware that it takes at least a day to deliver original documents to the reading room and up to a week to deliver documents that are located in our remote repository. Calculate plenty of time for your stay to find, order and of course, read your documents. If you already know the signature of the archival records you want to see, you can order them in advance via e-mail: lesesaal@archiv.wien.gv.at

What to bring with you:

  • Proof of Identity: driver's licence, passport or identity card
  • Notebook, pencil, ring binder or portable computer
  • If you want files to be scanned: a USB-stick
  • A 2-euro coin as returnable deposit for a locker - for security reasons you will be obliged to leave coats and bags in lockers
  • Please bring as much background information as you can on your enquiry. This will enable our staff to give you the best possible advice about how to conduct your research. If you are in any doubt, contact our enquiry service in advance.

If you have found specific references to records held in our archives while studying published books be sure to make a full note of these and bring it with you when you visit us.

You can scan documents in our reading room and save them to an USB-stick or take photos of the pages you are interested in.

Please remember that the reading room is a quiet area and that we all have the responsibility to treat our holdings carefully. With your help we can ensure that future generations will have the pleasure of using these precious resources (please see: Regulations of the Municipal and Provincial Archives of Vienna).
