Results - PUMA

The following results are some examples for the entire Vienna City Administration:

  • By fitting all computer workplaces with switchable power strips, energy consumption in times of absence can be reduced to zero. The costs for this measure will be amortised after a few weeks and given the City Administration’s 20,000 PCs the measure will save about 140,000 kg CO2.
  • Switching nearly all of the City’s 10,000 printers to "duplex printing" helped save large amounts of paper.
  • The replacement of 60 old and inefficient heating circulation pumps by modern, efficient pumps supported by the PUMA programme in one municipal department led to an annual reduction of CO2 emissions by about 11,000 kg.
  • The fuel-saving driving training provided the basis for a significant reduction in fuel consumption. In the training courses, which were attended by about 500 drivers of official vehicles, the average fuel consumption was reduced by 14 percent, while at the same time reducing travel times by six percent.
  • The comprehensive annual campaigns for "energy-saving airing (fast airing)" held among about 30,000 employees of the Vienna City Administration caused a change in people’s attitudes and reduced heat consumption, heating costs and CO2 emissions.
  • For several years, the Vienna City Administration has not installed any new conventional light bulbs. By using energy-saving lamps, energy consumption from room lighting was reduced by up to 80 percent and CO2 emissions were also lowered.
  • Inspection and supervisory staff on the Donauinsel recreational area were equipped with new electric bicycles, which help to avoid numerous journeys by car and reduce exhaust gas emissions in sensitive areas.
  • The permanent deactivation of the front panel lighting of all vending machines installed in the office buildings of the City Administration saves 100,000 kWh or about 20,000 kg CO2 per year.
