General information

The installation of septic tanks and soakage pits and house sewerage plants and oil, petrol and grease separators is subject to the relevant standards and the Sewage System and Connection Tariff Act (Kanalanlagen- und Einmündungsgebührengesetz 1955).

Requirements

Before setting up a septic tank or soakage pit, house sewerage plant and oil, petrol and grease separator you should check whether there is a public sewer at the location, e.g. using the sewer information system KANIS (German).

Documents required

• Septic tank: No construction permit required
• Rainwater soakage pits: Construction permit required from Municipal Department 37 - Building Inspection (MA 37) after approval by Municipal Department 45 - Water Management (MA 45)
• Domestic sewage treatment systems that discharge into a receiving water: Water law permit required from Municipal Department 58 - Water Rights (MA 58)
• Domestic sewage treatment systems that discharge into a soakage pit: Construction permit required from Municipal Department 37 - Building Inspection (MA 37) (for the soakage pit) and water law permit required from Municipal Department 58 - Water Rights (MA 58)

Fees

The fees for the documents to be filed are determined by Municipal Department 37 - Building Inspection.

For any questions regarding payment, please contact the competent accounting department (Buchhaltungsabteilung 40) (German) of Municipal Department 6 - Accounting Services, Duties and Charges.

Further information

Septic tanks and separators must be emptied by Wien Kanal or authorised businesses. The removal of the contents of septic tanks by the owner is prohibited.
