Housing benefit (Wohnbeihilfe) for students

The City of Vienna supports its low-income residents with a housing benefit scheme. Students can also apply for a housing benefit if they meet certain criteria. Whether your request for a housing benefit will be approved depends on the following factors:

  • Size of your family/number of people living with you
  • Family income (income of all people living in the same household)
  • Size of the flat
  • Housing expenditure (Wohnungsaufwand)

When applying, you have to disclose your own financial situation, and the one of your parents, as your parents’ obligation to pay maintenance is also counted as part of your income in Vienna.

The housing benefit is allocated by Municipal Department 50 - Housing Promotion and Arbitration Board for Legal Housing Matters (MA 50) (German).

For further information on housing benefit and how to apply as well as for contact details visit the section Grants and funding.

You can also contact the advisory centre for housing law issues (Wohnrechtsberatung) at the Austrian National Union of Students (Österreichische Hochschüler/innenschaft - ÖH) (German) for advice on housing benefit.
