Strategy "VIENNA 2030 - Economy & Innovation"

  • The new Economy and Innovation Strategy aims at strengthening Vienna as a business location and at creating high-skilled jobs
  • It focuses on excellence in 6 thematic areas
  • Guidance is provided by the Vienna Economic Council, a high-ranking group of experts

The Strategy "VIENNA 2030 - Economy & Innovation" builds on the strengths of the business location Vienna and makes use of the existing potential. The intention is to put forward "Viennese solutions” to provide answers to the big challenges of coming years from climate change to digitalisation. Vienna strives to become a world leader in these and other thematic areas. The city wants to create prosperity and quality of life for all Viennese, in particular by providing high-skilled jobs and excellent infrastructure.

Areas of leadership

The 6 thematic areas, which have been defined in the "VIENNA 2030" strategy, build on the existing strengths of the location. By 2030, the following thematic areas will be developed into internationally competitive and highly visible areas of leadership:

  • Smart solutions for life in the 21st-century city
  • Vienna as a metropolis of health
  • Digitalisation, Vienna-style
  • Smart production in the big city
  • place of international encounter
  • Vienna - a metropolis of culture and creativity

Implementation through lead projects

Since fall 2019, the strategy "VIENNA 2030 - Economy & Innovation" has been implemented through flagship projects. These projects develop special potential for employment, value added and innovation at the location, in six key topics and ten fields of action. Relevant stakeholders has been systematically involved for the effective implementation of the strategy and the creation of synergies between organizations and companies at the location. New flagship projects are decided by the Vienna Economic Council.

Strategy development

Executive City Councillor Peter Hanke has tasked the Economic Affairs, Labour and Statistics Department (MA 23) with coordinating the development of Vienna’s economy and innovation strategy "VIENNA 2030 - Economy & Innovation". It ties in with existing strategies such as the Smart City Framework Strategy and replaces the former strategy "Innovative Vienna 2020".

In addition, Executive City Councillor Hanke paid personal visits to more than one hundred local enterprises to gather important incentives for the strategy from the management as well as from staff members.

Vienna Economic Council

All stakeholders from the fields of economy and innovation in Vienna were involved in the strategy development process. They are members of the Vienna Economic Council and include representatives of social partners as well as entrepreneurs and experts from the fields of science and research.
