Introduction

Our way towards a climate-friendly city

The effects of the climate crisis have long been evident on a global scale. Heat waves, droughts, oppressively warm nights and extreme precipitation events show clearly why we must continue to pursue a systematic climate policy and protect the resources that are essential for our life. For decades already, the City of Vienna has taken a pioneering role in the field of climate protection. One example of this commitment is the Vienna Climate Guide 2040, which was adopted in 2022. This document defines strategic levers and concrete measures for Vienna to become a climate-neutral and climate-resilient city by 2040.

The evaluation and monitoring of the Vienna Climate Guide in 2024/2025 shows how we act decisively in concert and how well prepared the Austrian capital is for the implementation of innovative and sustainable solutions. The City of Vienna is implementing various measures to remain the most livable city in the world in the future. These measures include greening streets and buildings, transitioning to climate-friendly energy sources and supply, and promoting resource conservation. These strong commitments to climate protection, climate adaptation, and the circular economy demonstrate Vienna's serious approach to sustainability.
