February 2018 - Intercultural calendar

The list provides an overview of the most important holidays of the largest religious and ethnic groups in Vienna as well as traditional holidays in February.

Traditional holidays

14 February: Valentine's Day
Flowers are given to loved ones as a sign of love and affection.
16 February: Chinese New Year
The beginning of the Year of the Dog in the Chinese calendar. The festival is celebrated with fireworks and lion and dragon dances.

Christianity

2 February: Presentation of Jesus at the Temple (Catholic)
Celebrates an early episode in the life of Jesus when Mary and Joseph took the Infant Jesus to the Temple 40 days after his birth. Traditionally also called "Candlemas".
14 February: Ash Wednesday (Catholic, Protestant)
The 40 day season of Lent starts for Catholics when carnival has ended. Ashes are marked on worshippers as a sign of perishableness and penitence.

Islam

6 to 8 February: Hizir / Holiday (8) (Alevi)
Hizir is honoured with a three-day fast in mid-February called Hizir Orucu (Hizir Fast). Many Alevi fast during this time to honour Hizir, a holy figure who they believe saves those who are in distress. Alevi call on him for help and rescue.

Judaism

28 February: The Fast of Esther (Ta’anit Esther)
Ta'anit Esther is a Jewish fast commemorating the three-day fast observed by the Jewish people in the story of Purim.
