Vienna language vouchers

The City of Vienna subsidises German language courses for migrants under specific circumstances. Migrants receive Vienna language vouchers (Wiener Sprachgutscheine) that you can cash in for specific German language courses. The vouchers are valid for 30 months from the date of issue.

If you are a third country national

The Vienna language voucher

You have come to Austria from a third country in the past two years. This means that you have not come to Vienna from the European Union (EU), Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland. It also means that you have to meet the requirements of the Integration Agreement (Integrationsvereinbarung 2017). If you have received an initial residence permit, you have to submit proof of German language skills at A2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) within two years (24 months). You also need to prove your knowledge about democracy and the values of law and society in Austria.

If you want to apply for a residence permit long-term resident EU (Daueraufenthalt-EU) after five years of legal residence in Austria, you need to submit proof of German language skills at B1 level and a thorough knowledge of the fundamental values of law and society in Austria.

The City of Vienna supports you in learning German with the Vienna language voucher in the amount of 300 Euro (3 vouchers for 100 Euro each). You also have to meet the following requirements:

  • You are in Vienna due to family reunification with an Austrian citizen, or
  • you are in Vienna due to family reunification with a third country national.
  • You have submitted your first application (Erstantrag) to Municipal Department 35 - Immigration and Citizenship (MA 35) and have received an initial residence permit.
  • You have received your Vienna education booklet at your start coaching appointment.

If you are an EEA national

You receive the Vienna language voucher in the amount of 150 Euro (3 vouchers for 50 Euro each), if you come from the European Economic Area (EEA). This includes the European Union EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. You also receive the Vienna language voucher in this amount as a third country national if you are a family member of an EEA national.

You also have to meet the following requirements:

  • You are a family member, a self-employed person, or an employee and have received a confirmation of registration (Anmeldebescheinigung) or a residence card (Aufenthaltskarte) in the past two years.
  • You have received your Vienna education booklet at your start coaching appointment.

Where can I get the language voucher?

The Vienna language voucher in the amount of 300 Euro or 150 Euro forms part of the Vienna education booklet (Wiener Bildungspass). You get your Vienna education booklet at your start coaching appointment under the Start Wien programme.

How and where can I use the language voucher?

You can cash in your Vienna language vouchers upon registration for a German language course with one of the official course providers (Kursanbieter) (German).
