Municipal Department 48 on the international scene

In the first half of 2021, Municipal Department 48 was able to share its extensive know-how with other cities and countries and to get to know best practice examples from abroad.

In 2021, Municipal Department 48 - Waste Management, Street Cleaning and Vehicle Fleet (MA 48) was able to successfully continue projects launched in the past few years: a case in point is Vienna's role as a Supporter City as part of the UN Habitat Programme's Waste Wise Cities Challenge. Within the scope of this project, Municipal Department 48 is providing support to the waste management department of Addis Ababa in Ethiopia, on the basis of a bilateral exchange.

Going virtual in times of COVID-19

In June 2021, Municipal Department 48 presented a new feature to an international audience, having switched to offering digital visits of various facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic. Staff members of a variety of international organisations, among them UNIDO, were able to learn more about the multifaceted work of Municipal Department 48 in an online presentation, which was followed by a virtual tour of the Rautenweg landfill site attended by 40 interested participants.

Municipal Department 48 is not only in touch with international audiences here in Vienna, but has already travelled far in 2021, albeit only virtually. An online conference of the International City Network of Zero Waste in June saw Municipal Department 48 represented in an active role giving online lectures in Beijing. Vienna's Waste Management Department presented a lecture with a subsequent debate focusing on the latest developments in Asia.

Also in June 2021, the European Commission hosted a specially organised "TAIEX-REGIO PEER 2 PEER Workshop" on waste management, with Municipal Department 48 serving as best practice example. The aim of the workshop was to familiarise staff from Bulgaria's ministries and public administration entities with the topic of the circular economy.

International best-practice sharing

Municipal Department 48 has long-standing experience when it comes to sharing best practices in a range of different fields falling within its remit. Be it sharing information on waste management with other cities in Austria and abroad, engaging in Waste Watcher activities or attending international conferences on winter maintenance services, Municipal Department 48 has plenty of international contacts and is keen to maintain them even in times of COVID-19 - albeit using a slightly different approach now.
