The City of Vienna participated in the online-event "Equality in Progress: Empowering Women - Much Discussed, Least Conceptualized" organized by the DA.

The regular cooperation between the City of Vienna and the "Vienna School of International Studies" (Diplomatische Akademie, DA) includes a high-level conference organised annually by the DA students. This year's online-event focused on the various aspects of gender equality.

Austria and Vienna have committed to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) drawn up by the United Nations. Goal 5 stipulates gender equality, with panels focusing on the development and implementation of gender equality throughout different sectors: technology, medicine, business, economy, society, and politics. The UN Member States have committed to implementing the SDGs by 2030.

High interest in Vienna's know-how

At the conference, the City of Vienna's Department for Women's Affairs (MA 57) provided an inspiring overview of the Department's tasks, expertise and commitment. Speaking on Women in Modern Politics, MA 57 expert Laura Wimmer stressed that "women's participation and representation matter because of lots of reasons but unfortunately, this is not a guarantee for women-friendly policies".

Ursula Bauer, Head of Gender Mainstreaming at the City of Vienna's Executive Office for Organisation and Security, focused on Gender Budgeting to Gender City Planning. Addressing gender inequality during the Covid-19 pandemic, she said, "Vienna is one of the rare cities where women are represented by 50 percent in the COVID crisis team".

DA as vital partner to the City of Vienna

The Vienna School of International Studies was originally founded as the Oriental Academy by Empress Maria Theresa in 1754 and has become a vital partner to the City of Vienna. DA graduates represent Vienna in all parts of the world, usually in international or diplomatic professions, and thus contribute to Vienna's special status as a centre of international diplomacy.
