Climate protection - a key task of the Vienna Ombuds Office for Environmental Protection

The blanket term "climate protection" is used for all measures aimed at cutting greenhouse gas emissions in order to reduce the so-called greenhouse effect ("global warming") caused by human activities on Earth. The main focus is on raising energy efficiency while replacing fossil fuels by renewable energy sources.

The Ombuds Office is actively committed to implementing the City of Vienna Climate Protection Programme (KliP), and fully embraces its key aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Playing a pioneering role in climate protection, the Ombuds Office focuses on further promoting effective measures in this field. It also supports the second KliP objective by submitting suggestions for effective improvements in the fields of traffic and transport, energy provision and energy efficiency, and on how to prepare for the effects of climate change in urban areas. In this context, the Ombuds Office focuses on the "biological air-conditioning" effect that plants and green spaces (green facades and roofs, courtyard gardens, trees) are known to have on the city’s micro-climate.
