General information

Third-country nationals planning to take up permanent residence in Austria for the long term (not just temporarily) need a residence permit.

Requirements

Third-country nationals can apply for a Red-White-Red Card for startup founders (Rot-Weiß-Rot-Karte für Start-up-GründerInnen) if

  • innovative products, services, processes or technologies are developed or launched by the newly founded enterprise (startup) and
  • capital for the startup business in the amount of at least EUR 50,000 can be proven (at least half of which must be equity capital) and
  • the applicant has considerable personal influence on the management of the planned startup business.

Deadlines

Applications for an extension must be filed before expiration of the residence permit.

Documents required

  • Application for a residence permit ("Antrag auf Erteilung eines Aufenthaltstitels") in German
  • Valid travel document (e. g. passport)
  • Current biometric passport photo: the photo can be no more than six months old when the residence permit is granted.
  • Birth certificate or other equivalent document
  • If applicable:
    • Marriage certificate
    • Civil partnership certificate
    • Divorce certificate
    • Certificate of dissolution of a civil partnership
    • Adoption certificate
    • Documents proving family relationships
  • Legal proof of adequate accommodation (e. g. lease or rental agreement, proof of ownership)
  • Document showing the monthly rent and/or running costs of the accommodation
  • Proof of health insurance valid in Austria and covering all risks: overview of possible health insurances: 114 KB PDF
  • Proof of sufficient means of subsistence in Austria (e. g. payslip, income statements, employment contracts, confirmations of pension payments)
  • Current extract from the files of an officially recognised credit reference agency (e. g. Kreditschutzverband - KSV 1870 Information GmbH) (German)
  • Proof of completed vocational training (certificates or diplomas)
  • Proof of special skills:
    • letter of recommendation and
    • employment certificate
  • Proof of graduation from a tertiary educational institution (course of study with a minimum duration of three years):
    • certificate of graduation and
    • proof of the status of the university or other tertiary educational institution;
  • Proof of university studies (diploma, BA, MA or PhD) or vocational training in Austria:
    • certificate of graduation or
    • apprenticeship certificate
  • Proof of work experience:
    • letter of recommendation and
    • employment certificate
  • Proof of German or English language skills (international language diploma, course certificate)
  • Proof of investment capital including available equity capital
  • Proof of membership in a business incubator or support by a startup funding agency in Austria (contract concluded with the agency)
  • Business plan and documents proofing the innovative products, services, processes or technologies
  • Proof of considerable personal influence on the management of the planned startup (articles of association), except in case of a one-person business.
  • First-time application:

In some cases, additional documents may be required.

You must submit the original documents and copies.

The following documents must be certified by diplomatic certification or apostille:

  • Birth certificate
  • Marriage certificate
  • Civil partnership certificate
  • Divorce certificate
  • Certificate of dissolution of a civil partnership
  • Death certificate
  • Police clearance certificate

Documents issued in a language other than German must be filed together with a certified translation (by a certified court translator).

Fees

  • Basic fee: EUR 120
  • Further costs arise for civil status documents issued abroad. Depending on the type of document, this fee may be EUR 3.90, EUR 7.20 or EUR 14.30.

You will receive the residence permit after payment of the fee. You may pay these fees in cash or electronically by credit or cash card (German).

Form

Further information

  • The application must be filed in person.
  • Family reunification ("Rot-Weiß-Rot-Karte plus") is allowed.
  • Holders of a Red-White-Red Card ("Rot-Weiß-Rot-Karte") fulfil module I of the Integration Agreement (A2 CEFR) ex lege (by act of law).
  • The first residence permit is issued for a maximum duration of 24 months. Subsequently, a Red-White-Red Card plus ("Rot-Weiß-Rot-Karte plus") can be granted if all requirements are met pursuant to section 24 (4) of the Austrian Employment of Foreign Nationals Act (Ausländerbeschäftigungsgesetz (AuslBG) § 24 Abs. 4) (German).
  • If the validity of your passport is shorter than the possible grant period, the indefinite leave to remain is issued only according to the validity of the passport.
