Events and shows requiring a licence - application

German version

General information

Events under the Vienna Events Act are theatre performances as well as public displays, performances and amusements. Please note that a special licence under the Vienna Cinemas Act is required for the public viewing of films, videos, slides and similar images.

An event is considered public if it is publicly accessible or if more than 20 people can attend. Private celebrations, such as birthday parties or weddings in flats, single-family homes and their gardens are not considered public and therefore do not require official approval.

Events not covered by the Vienna Events Act include political events, events held by officially recognised churches or religious groups, events that are intended for the sole purpose of education or training, commercial fashion shows, trade fairs, and national celebrations.

Some events require official approval, others do not. Events requiring official approval are subdivided into events requiring registration and events requiring a licence. Click here for an overview of events requiring a registration or a licence (German).

A license is required for certain events, including major, large-scale events. This category includes all circus performances and animal shows.

Requirements

  • The organiser may be a natural person, a legal person or a registered business partnership.
  • The venue must be suitable for the event.
