Specific regulations due to the coronavirus pandemic - information for persons applying for a residence permit

Due to COVID-19 measures, you must make an appointment if you want to come to Municipal Department 35 (MA 35) in person.

You can only make an appointment in the following cases:

If you are a third-country national: First-time applications for a residence permit (Erstantrag auf einen Aufenthaltstitel)
- Making an appointment online (German)

If you are an EEA national or a family member of an EEA national: EEA documentation
- If you live in district 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 or 23, make an appointment online with Referat 5.0, (German) as this is the responsible immigration office for your district.
- If you live in district 1, 2, 9, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 or 22, make an appointment online with Referat 5.1, (German) as this is the responsible immigration office for your district.

Please note: If you submit an application for a child, you must fill in the name of the child in the application form.

Your appointment is invalid if you make it with the wrong office (Referat).

There are currently no personal appointments in the following cases:

You cannot make a personal appointment if you want to extend your residence permit or EEA documentation (confirmation of registration).
Please print the application for extension form (Verlängerungsantrag), fill it in and send it to us by post (German) including a current passport photo and copies of the required documents.

Please submit all additional documents by post or email (German).

If necessary, MA 35 will contact you to make a personal appointment.

Residence permits and EEA documentation

You can currently not pick up your residence permit or EEA documentation (confirmation of registration) in person. If you meet all the requirements, we will send you the residence permit or EEA documentation by post (registered letter - "RsA-Brief").

If you have submitted an application for extension of your residence permit, you will receive an acknowledgement of receipt (Einreichbestätigung) by post or email.

If you can currently not submit any documents due to the coronavirus situation, you must submit them as soon as possible at a later date.

First-time applications by third-country nationals

If your visa or visa-free stay has expired but you cannot leave the country, you can submit a follow-up application (Zusatzantrag) to Municipal Department 35 (MA 35).

You do not need to fill in a form for this application. Please send your follow-up application (Zusatzantrag) by email or post: Contact data (German).

In this follow-up application (Zusatzantrag) you must list all reasons why you were not able to leave the country before your visa or visa-free stay expired. Based on your individual situation, the authority will decide in every individual case whether a residence permit can be granted or not.

If your visa will expire soon and you cannot leave the country due to the current situation, please take note of the following:

The Aliens' Act (Fremdenpolizeigesetz) provides for the possibility to extend visas in certain situations. Application for extension (Verlängerungsantrag)

Please submit your application for extension (Verlängerungsantrag) in good time before your current residence permit expires. Send us your application, a current passport photo and all necessary documents by post. You can currently not submit your application in person.

If you have submitted an application for extension (Verlängerungsantrag) in good time you can stay in Austria until a decision has been made on your application. You can continue to work if you have been allowed to work under your previous residence permit.

Permanent leave to remain - EU (Daueraufenthalt - EU)

If you have a permanent residence permit (permanent leave to remain - EU (Daueraufenthalt - EU)), you can stay in Austria and continue to work even if your residence permit has expired. You can apply for a new permanent leave to remain - EU (Daueraufenthalt - EU) any time after your previous residence permit has expired.

Red-White-Red Card (Rot-Weiß-Rot-Karte) and EU Blue Card (Blaue Karte EU)

If you hold a Red-White-Red Card (Rot-Weiß-Rot-Karte) or an EU Blue Card (Blaue Karte EU) and have any questions regarding the short-time work benefit scheme (Kurzarbeit) or the termination of your employment, please contact the Public Employment Service (Arbeitsmarktservice (AMS) (German).
