Acquiring Austrian citizenship for persons persecuted by the Nazi regime and their descendants

The Austrian National Council has adopted an amendment to the Austrian Citizenship Act (Österreichisches Staatsbürgerschaftsgesetz, StbG): 87 KB PDF (German)

The following persons will be eligible to obtain Austrian citizenship:

  • Austrian citizens and persons who were citizens of one of the successor states of the former Austro-Hungarian Monarchy or stateless persons who had their primary residence in Austria but had to leave Austria before 15 May 1955 because they were persecuted by the Nazi regime
  • Descendants of these persons in direct descending line, including adoptive children who were adopted when they were minors

Please note that descendants can only file an application pursuant to Art. 58c of the Austrian Citizenship Act (Österreichisches Staatsbürgerschaftsgesetz, StbG) once the law has come into effect on 1 September 2020.

We will provide information about the required documents in good time before the law comes into effect.
