Travelling with Animals
Some requirements apply for travelling to the EU with dogs, cats or ferrets. No special certificates are required for other pets, such as rabbits, guinea pigs or parrots.

Importing dogs, cats or ferrets to the EU
Imports from Andorra, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, San Marino, Switzerland or the Vatican State: When importing from the above countries the same conditions apply as with travelling inside the EU and Norway with dogs, cats or ferrets without special conditions. Vaccination passes, EU import certificates proving non-commercial import of pets or the EU Pet Passes may be used for the purpose.
Importing from Antigua and Barbuda, the Dutch Antilles, Aruba, Ascension, Australia, Bahrain, Barbados, Bermuda, Chile, the Falkland Islands, Fiji, French Polynesia, Futuna, the Grenadine, Hong Kong, Jamaica, Japan, the Caiman Islands, Canada, Croatia, Mauritius, Mayotte, Montserrat, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Russia, Saint Helena, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, Saint Vincent, Singapore Vanuatu, United Arab Emirates, the United States of America and Wallis.
When importing from the above countries the following conditions apply:
- Identification by chip (ISO standard 11784 or 11785) or tattoo (as of July 3, 2011 only chips will be recognized)
- Valid rabies vaccination
- EU import certificate approved by official veterinarian to confirm non-commercial import of pets
You may import animals not vaccinated under three months of age provided you adher to the conditions mentioned above. Importing from other third countries, such as Turkey, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Romania
When importing from other third countries the following conditions apply:
- Identification by chip (ISO standard 11784 or 11785) or tattoo (as of July 3, 2011 only chips will be recognized)
- Valid rabies vaccination
- Positive rabies antibody search test not earlier than 30 days after rabies vaccination and no later than three months prior to import
- EU import certificate approved by official veterinarian to confirm non-commercial import of pets
Reimporting animals
To reimport animals (following a stay abroad, amongst others) from other third countries a positive rabies antibody search test must have been performed prior to departure from the EU. Animals not tested may only be reimported following a positive rabies antibody search test abroad and a waiting period of three months.
Rabies antibody search test
A rabies antibody search test becomes due once only if a booster vaccination (according to producers instructions) has been performed no later than one year after the pervious vaccination.
To import animals to countries outside the EU and non-European countries please check with the relevant embassies for conditions effective in those countries. Some countries require a health certificate issued by an official veterinarian.
For other pets, such as rabbits, guinea pigs or parrots no special certificates are required.
