Developing strategies for Vienna 2025

Model of the WU-Campus

The new Vienna University of Economics and Business

The broad discussion, information and participation process "Vienna 2025 - my future" started on 10 April 2013. The Viennese are invited to submit their proposals and voice their opinions on the future of their city and their neighbourhood. "Vienna 2025" aims to provide a broad discussion on the future development of Vienna on its way to becoming a city with two million inhabitants. The topics from the discussion process should become part of the Urban Development Plan STEP 2025.

Maria Vassilakou, member of the city government, responsible for urban development and public participation:

We have started a broad process in a completely new form that will pull out all the stops. We are asking the Viennese to share their visions on the future of our city. It is important for us to know how the citizens see the development of the city in the next ten to 15 years. It is our task to find a balance between the opinions of the public and those of experts, politics, and administration.

Opportunities through growth

Vienna is the fastest growing city in the German-speaking countries. The population increased by about 25,000 people in 2012 alone. This development opens up many new opportunities but, at the same time, the city also faces a number of challenges. The main topics to be addressed are affordable housing, developing new neighbourhoods with quality and identity, creating jobs, and developing strategies for climate protection. The city now wants to develop these future strategies in cooperation with the Viennese.

Website and social media

Information about the project and ways of participation will be available on a new website where users will find information about local and regional strategies, theories of urban development, and national and international examples. They can voice their opinions and prioritise them. A facebook page in combination with flickr and twitter is available for online discussions where users can post messages, photos, and videos.

future.labs

Different interest groups organise workshops, so-called future.labs, on occasion of Vienna 2025. future.labs provide the scope for innovative and unusual approaches, perspectives, and views. Participants of future.labs develop contents and positions with regard to urban development in Vienna. The interest groups are responsible for organising and implementing future.labs and for the topics discussed there. The City of Vienna supports the organisation of the events. future.labs are held at the Vienna University of Technology, Lokale Agenda 21, Siemens, and at the Chamber of Architects and Engineering Consultants.

Discussion "The future of Vienna"

Urban development strategies are presented to experts and the interested public to seek their opinion in three public events under the title "Wien wohin? Stadt entwickeln" (The future of Vienna. Building a city for tomorrow.). The objectives of urban development in Vienna are discussed on these occasions and the public has the opportunity to comment on and vote for the proposals and theses. Those responsible in politics and administration get valuable feedback on their work and suggestions with regard to alternative concepts or strategies. The first event on the topic of growth will take place on 22 May 2013 at the Odeon theatre with room for about 400 participants. Programme and registration will shortly be available on the Vienna 2025 website.
