New leisure areas along the River Wien valley

The first of three large terraces will be built along the River Wien valley (Wiental) by 2015. With the project the city creates new leisure areas in the densely-built urban area.

The City of Vienna promotes investment into public space and creates new green and leisure areas for the Viennese.

Large terraces above the subway line along the River Wien will be built to provide the residents in the densely-built area along the River Wien valley with additional green and leisure areas.

Upgrading of public space

The 3rd district (Landstraße) has a share of green space of 21 percent, the 2nd district (Leopoldstadt) of 62 percent, but the 5th district (Margareten) has a share of only seven percent and the 6th district (Mariahilf) of merely three percent.

The terraces should revitalise the River Wien valley, make the area safer, and turn it into a place of communication. "The terraces along the River Wien valley are an innovative project to enhance and upgrade the densely-built urban area", says Susanne Schaefer-Wiery, district chairwoman of Margareten.

The plan is to build three terraces along the River Wien valley in the area between the subway stop "Pilgramgasse" (exit Ramperstorffergasse) and the Nevillebrücke bridge. The first terrace will be built by 2015.

Maria Vassilakou, Deputy Mayor and City Councillor for Urban Planning: "We would like to provide the residents along the River Wien valley with more opportunities to spend a warm, sunny day outside, and we would also like to minimise the narrow points along the pedestrian and cycle paths. We will therefore create new leisure areas and places of communication that should feel like a living room in the city."

The new leisure areas should turn the River Wien valley into a place of communication and provide the residents with the opportunity to spend their leisure time in the green areas right in front of their front doors.
