The new wien.at city map: beta version becomes new standard

Detail of the new wien.at city map

Detailed, well-structured and modern: the new online city map on wien.at, the City of Vienna's web service.

The beta version of the online city map combines a broad range of geographic services with a user-friendly interface and fresh design. After becoming very popular with users during the one-year test phase, it has finally replaced the original version of the online city map, and is now simply available at http://www.wien.gv.at/stadtplan/en/.

What are the features of the new city map?

The new online city map offers a broad spectrum of search and display options, ranging from traffic and transport information to culture and leisure, from public facilities and services (e.g. doctors and medical services) to route suggestions for themed city walks. Key information on most buildings or locations on the map - such as a short description, a photo or web address - can be displayed in a separate "information bubble", i.e. a speech-bubble shaped insert window. High-resolution aerial photographs ("aerophotos") provide a detailed view of Vienna as seen from the bird's-eye perspective. A special focus in developing the new city map was on providing an intuitive user interface.

Highlights

  • Easy to use: The map can be panned easily via drag-and-drop with the mouse. To change the zoom factor (and adapt the map's scale), simply move your mouse wheel or double-click on the image. Alternatively, you can use the navigation buttons in the top right corner of the map.
  • Customisable interface: The buttons in the top right margin of the map allow you to choose between a coloured version and a black-and-white version of the background map, or to select the high-resolution aerial photo view.
  • Extra information on map contents: Select the contents you want shown on the map in the left-hand menu, and they will be displayed immediately. Simply click on one of the content symbols on the map for extra information on the respective building or location (- this feature is available for most items).
  • Further options: a toolbar with additional options and features is displayed in the top left margin of the map. For example, you can measure the distance between two or more locations on the map.
  • Search: Simply type the address or building you are looking into the search window. If your search produces a single result, the map is automatically refocused on the target location. An ambiguous search will produce a list of all results.
  • Advanced search: Use this option to obtain specific information on the map contents. You may always return to map display mode; your advanced search settings will remain active.
  • Print view: Click on the "Print view" link in the right-hand corner above the map window to print a copy of your customised city map.
  • Website integration: the button "Link / bookmark" above the map allow users to bookmark or forward permanent links to specific map sections. Use the same option to integrate a map image into a different website. Please read our general terms of use.
