Old Danube

The recreational area along the Old Danube emerged when the river was first trained between 1870 and 1875. 1.5 square kilometres of water body make an ideal playground for all kinds of sports, such as swimming, sailing or surfing. You can rent electric, pedal and sail boats, canoes and kayaks at 13 boat rentals in the area.

There are eleven public pools for summer swimming. Skating is a popular pastime here in the winter. The Old Danube’s excellent water quality has attracted many fish. It is habitat for carp, tench, silurid and pike.

Vienna Woods

The Vienna Woods refers to an extensive area, approximately 135,000 hectares in size, to the west of Vienna. Most of the Woods are located in Lower Austria and only a small part reaches into Vienna. More than half of the area is wooded.

The Woods used to be a popular source of firewood, construction wood and charcoal for the growing city of Vienna. Wood consumption and deforestation soared in the course of 18 th and 19 th century industrialisation. Careful wood management and reforestation of many areas were an inevitable consequence. The Woods became a popular daytrip destination for the Viennese in the early 19 th century.

Today the Woods are considered one of the main urban recreational areas. Hikers and mountain bikers are attracted to the many paths and hiking routes. There are eight routes mapped out especially for bikers.
