Assistance and Grants for Students

School assistance

School assistance is awarded to Austrian citizens and those of equal status:

  • citizens from EEA countries in accordance with individual agreements
  • refugees under the Geneva Refugee Convention
  • students of foreign nationality and stateless students, provided one of their parents has been paying income tax in Austria and has made Austria their main place of residence for a minimum of five years

Students must also provide proof of need for help on social grounds. The following information is required to assess a person's need for help on social grounds:

  • income,
  • marital status and
  • family size of the student, their parents and their spouses on the day of application

Along with the above criteria, students must also comply with the requirements below:

  • attendance of an intermediate or higher-level school from level 10 of the Austrian school system
  • proof of appropriate academic success
  • no repeat attendance of the same level
  • first school attendance prior to 30 years of age

Appropriate academic success means an average assessment of below 2.9 ( below "average") for compulsory subjects.

School assistance amounts to 982 Euro per year. Application forms and information sheets are available at the principals' offices of all secondary schools in Vienna.

Use of Vienna Public Transport (Wiener Linien)

Apprentices and students who have not completed 26 years of age are granted free use of public transport for travels to and from their school for a fee of 19.6 Euro. Student ID is required as proof.
