Fachhochschulen in Vienna
Fachhochschulen (FH) or vocational higher education institutions were first established in Austria in 1993. They are different from universities of science inasmuch as they provide practice-oriented and strictly regimented courses, with a minimum of three years each. Courses are either full-time or part-time for on-the-job students. More than half of FH students in Vienna are under employment. Leaving certificates include academic degrees Mag. (FH) and DI (diplomas). Some courses are completed with a bachelor's degree. In Vienna there are currently five different organisations offering 47 FH courses and for a total of 6,735 students which is approximately one fourth of FH places in Austria.
